The unusually short stay required for the treatment of such complex medical problems is highly structured. Treatment begins with the Evaluation Phase, during which the patient receives a comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation. In this phase, patients also learn to use a specially devised personal assessment system to monitor their own health and behavior during the program and after discharge.

In the Treatment Phase, patients use the newly learned self-monitoring skills to assess their daily progress. These techniques help the physician, staff and patients determine changes in the evolving individual treatment plans.

The Maintenance Phase continues the program after discharge through a community support group and other aftercare agreed upon by the patient, the primary physician and the referring physician.
